The US Open is one of the oldest tennis championships in the world, dating back to 1881. The US Open became the fourth and final grand slam of the ATP and WTA tours in 1987.

Types of events:

The US Open tournament has five different main events: Men and Women’s singles, Men and Women’s doubles, mixed doubles with extra tournaments held for junior, senior and wheelchair players.

Winners of the US Open 2024 include:

  • Men's Singles: Jannik Sinner

  • Women's Doubles: Ljoedmyla Kitsjenok / Jelena Ostapenko

Location & Stadiums of the US Open:

The US Open holds 22 courts. The most famous is the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City, which holds an impressive 22,547 seats. It got its name after Arthur Ashe, the African-American tennis player who won the men's final of the inaugural US Open in 1968.

The second largest is the Louis Armstrong Stadium, which opened in 1978, holding 18,000 seats. It resided as the main stadium until 1996 when it was reduced to 10,200 seats, to incorporate the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The third largest stadium, Grandstand, has the capacity to hold 6,000 people. In 2011, Court 17 opened. The stadium had electronic line calling and large tv screens, giving players the opportunity to challenge decisions. As well as these four show courts, there are also 13 field courts and five practise courts.

Court Surface:

Since 1978, the US Open has been played on a hard court surface called Pro DecoTurf. This is a multi-layer cushioned surface, having slightly less friction and producing a lower bounce compared to other hard courts. In 2005, all US Open courts were given blue inner courts to make the ball more visible on TV. Every year the courts are resurfaced.

Former Greats:

Some of the greatest players of all time have won the US Open. Former winners of the tournament include: Pat Rafter, Roger Federer, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, Fred Perry and in recent times Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka.
