History of the Australian Open:

The tournament dates back to 1905, when it was known as the Australian Championship. It changed its name in 1969 to Australian Open. Due to its geographical location, foreign players did not compete in the tournament until 1946, when the US came over.

Types of events during Australian Open:

The tournament has five different main events: Men and Women’s singles, Men and Women’s doubles and mixed doubles with extra tournaments held for junior, senior and wheelchair players.

Winners of Australian Open 2020:

  • Men’s Singles: Novak Djokovic
  • Women’s Singles: Sofia Kenin
  • Men’s Doubles: Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury
  • Women’s Doubles: Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic
  • Mixed Doubles: Nikola Mektic and Barbora Krejčíková

Location & Stadiums of Australian Open:

Since 1988, The Australian Open has been held at Melbourne Park in the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct. The venue has three main arenas: the Hisense Arena, Margaret Court Arena, Rod Laver Arena (Centre Court, which has the greatest capacity of 14,820 people). All these venues have retractable roofs to decrease rain delays and avoid scorching heat.

Although the Australian Open is held in January every year, this is the summer season in Australia. Temperatures can rise up to 45 degree celsius. The Grand Slam has an Extra Heat Policy (EHP), which allows umpires to suspend a tennis match if the temperatures become too warm.

Court Surface:

Before 1988 the Australian Open was played on grass. Since 2008 the courts were made out of Plexicushion acrylic surfaces, which creates a medium surface speed.

Former Greats:

Some of the former Australian Open greats include: Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, Mike and Bob Bryan, Roy Emerson and Margaret Court (winner of the most female singles titles), Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Margaret Smith.
