With its first edition in 1953, Barcelona Open is the oldest tennis tournament in Spain. Since 1990, Barcelona Open has been added as an ATP-500 tournament and has become part of the ATP Championship Series.
Barcelona Open is played at Real Club de Tenis, Barcelona. The tennis club has 18 courts, including one where the Barcelona Open matches are played. Since 2017, the organisation has changed the name of the main court to "Pista Rafa Nadal" to honour Nadal who managed to win Barcelona Open no less than 12 times in his career.
